As of June 1, 2026, the internationally renowned Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences for Wine, Viticulture and More has appointed Prof. Dr. Karl H. Mühling as its new president. An equally internationally renowned scientist and expert in plant nutrition, Mühling succeeds Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, who has significantly shaped Geisenheim University as its president for the past 13 years. Mühling was elected by the university's extended senate in the first round of voting at the end of January for a six-year term and received his official appointment certificate from the Hessian Minister of Science, Timon Gremmels, on May 29, 2026.

Curriculum Vitae and Teaching Experience

Born in 1961 in Gießen; studied agricultural sciences and received his doctorate in Gießen, habilitated in Kiel in 1998; from 1999 to 2001 as a DFG scholarship holder and Research Associate at the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources of the University of California at Davis in the USA.

From 2003 to 2007, Mühling researched and taught as a professor of plant nutrition at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

Since 2007, Mühling has been a professor of plant nutrition at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, where he also held leading positions as dean and vice dean for several years.

Through his many years of scientific and practical experience, Mühling brings with him a broad network of connections in various scientific associations. He currently serves as President of the umbrella organization of scientific societies for agricultural, forestry, nutritional, veterinary, and environmental research (DAF), has been a permanent member of the board of the German Society for Plant Nutrition (DGP) since 2019, and an honorary member of the German Society for Quality Research in Plant-Based Foods (DGQ) since 2023. In addition, he is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, Section Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Plants, and Associate Editor of the Journal Frontiers in Plant Science.
