One-hundred-year-old Pinot Noir rarities, special bottlings, and strictly limited collector's bottles were the focus of this year's VDP.AUKTION.RÉSERVE, which—organized by VDP.Rheingau (VDP = Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and the Kloster Eberbach wine estate—took place on March 7, 2026, in its historic lay dormitory. Eleven Rheingau member wine estates submitted 42 lots, generating total proceeds of €250,632 (plus buyer's premium and VAT). Among the submitters were the VDP wine estates Allendorf, Wein- und Sektgut Barth, August Eser, Johannishof, Kloster Eberbach, Künstler, von Oetinger, Georg Müller Stiftung, Prinz, Robert Weil, and the Geisenheim University winery.
The highest bid of 12,500 euros was achieved by the Robert Weil winery for its Monte Vacano Riesling 2023, a unique wine in the 6-liter bottle 'Methusalem'.
Other highlights included the 100-year-old 1926 Spätburgunder Assmannshäuser Höllenberg from Kloster Eberbach wine estate, the proceeds of which amounted to 5,100 euros went to the Wiesbaden-based association Aufwind!, which supports children whose parents are suffering from cancer.
With the year 2026 in mind, numerous anniversary wines were in the spotlight, such as the following examples: The August Eser winery auctioned a 1966 Rauenthaler Rothenberg Riesling Feine Auslese. The Georg Müller Foundation offered a 2006 "Cuvée Katharina" Riesling Auslese. The Kloster Eberbach winery also presented a 2016 Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Frühburgunder.
Anniversary wine for Hesse's 80th birthday
A special wine from Eberbach Monastery was featured to mark the 80th anniversary of the state of Hesse: a 1946 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Beerenauslese, which was auctioned off by Hesse's Minister of Viticulture, Ingmar Jung, for 2,800 euros.
| Designations for large bottles 1.5 l: Magnum; 3 l: Double Magnum or Jeroboam, which in Bordeaux can also mean 4.5 to 5 l (this designation is not standardized); 6 l: Methuselah or Imperial |
