He was a very important architect and in retirement he went fully among the winemakers, Heinz Knapp, where he is no less successful, which our neutral testers in blind tasting in the tasting on 23.9.2024 fully confirmed with 90 to 92 bonvinitas points. By the way, red dots mean category 2, dry, over 12% alcohol - here is our rating system. As always, I test the very well-rated wines, here are my notes:

Lots of structure and backbone: 90 bonvinitas points

2022 Baden-Badener Pinot Noir, quality wine Baden, 12.5%: Deep scent of morello cherry compote, elderberry juice, nougat, charcoal; on the tongue, a juicy body with structure, a lot of backbone and well-fitted tannins is revealed, which grow again in the finish and then fade away full of character. A rather masculine red wine at a pleasant 12.5%, which accompanies well goulash, a leg of lamb, game or a beef steak.

Lots of juice and strength: 90 bonvinitas points

2023 Baden-Badener Silberbuckel Riesling Qualitätswein Baden, 12,5%: Ripe, dense scent of lemon juice, lemon zest, lemon balm with a hint of green pepper; a juicy, crisp body then rolls over the tongue accompanied by fruit and subtle pepper notes in the background, with a lot of juice and power that reaches into the finish and only gradually says goodbye. Fits well with roast pork, breaded chop or smoked eel.

Unctuous, flanked by vegetative notes: 90 bonvinitas points

2023 Baden-Badener Veltliner, quality wine Baden, 13%: Ripe, smooth fragrance with notes of ripe Williams pears, vanilla, butter biscuits; on the tongue, an equally supple body flanked by vegetative notes reminiscent of artichokes is revealed, which continues mouth-filling in the finish and fades away in subtly salty notes. Good choice with salad or stronger fish dishes, such as fried plaice, as well as roast pork.

Mouth-filling with mineral notes: 90 bonvinitas points

2023 Baden-Badener Pinot Blanc, 13%: Lively scent of apple compote, lemon zest, white chocolate; mouth-filling on the palate with subtle mineral notes, slightly salty; firm finish in which vegetative notes emerge like green peppers framed by delicate glaze. Fits well with Wiener Schnitzel, roast veal or grilled chicken.

From lime blossom in the fragrance to a firmly structured finish: 92 bonvinitas points

Knapp Wine Estate, new planting on the Baden-Baden EckbergKnapp Wine Estate, new planting on the Baden-Baden Eckberg
2023 Baden-Badener Eckberg Sauvignon Blanc, 12.5%: Right at the beginning, a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc scent is met with the typical engaging mixture of green peppers, lemon balm, lime blossoms; it starts crystal clear on the tongue, then a firm body builds up with the typical vegetative notes, slightly salty accompanied; this is followed by a firmly structured finish in which the pepper notes make themselves known again. Very nice with old hard cheese; Beef or oxmouth salad, as well as ham in bread dough.

Heinz Knapp and his wine estate in Baden-Baden

First of all: It is a real Baden-Baden winery not in the incorporated Rebland but above the Lichtental district. The vines look down on the city.

Heinz Knapp (on the right)Heinz Knapp (on the right)As early as 1986, in addition to his Baden-Baden architectural office, which is now run by his son, Knapp fulfilled a childhood dream with the first harvest on his own wine estate, Château L ́Arnaude near Lorgues in Haute-Provence, which he expanded vigorously and led to success. In 2006, he shifted his viticultural dreams to Baden-Baden with the planting of vines directly at the historic hunting lodge of the former Margravine Sibylla Augusta from 1716, and in 2012 it became a large winery with the takeover and reorganization of the urban Baden-Baden vineyards above the city on the Silberbuckel, Eckberg and Schafberg. In the meantime, Knapp is considered a recognized expert in viticulture.
